Whether by personal carrier or through the  mail, when that invitation arrives at the home of your guest,  it will be the first impression they'll have about your wedding.  Just by looking at it, they should be able to determine if your wedding is formal or informal, how to dress, if children or welcome, if you should allow yourself extra time in order to be punctual, where the reception will be and whether or not you'll need to RSVP.  So, you can see how very important the invitation will be.

Choosing just the right invitation can be mind boggling because there are so many different papers, designs, writing styles and colors.  Take your time with this and visit a few places whether on line or out shopping.  When it comes to invitations, it pays to shop around.  I found that there were different styles and so forth available at different locations and I also found that the prices differed,  sometimes a good bit.

Purchase everything at the same time and at the same place and make sure you get enough, possibly a little more than you think you'll need.  When you have to go back and order more invitations, envelopes, RSVP cards, thank you notes and even wedding programs,  you may end up receiving products that are slightly different in color.

When you begin addressing your invitations, remember that some things have changed.  There are some new options available to you now.  It is no longer considered improper etiquette if you don't use an inner envelope.  Now, you can send the invitation with or without the inner envelope.  If you do choose to use the inner envelope, remember to put only the invitee's name on it.  Also, placing a sheet of loose white tissue in the invitation in order to protect the card is optional.

If you can't invite everyone to the wedding because of matters having to do with space or location, you can send them an invitation to the reception only.  You will use a reception card for this purpose.

These days, people just don't respect the importance of RSVP cards.  I don't know why but they just won't RSVP.  When you're planning a seated,  full course meal for a couple of hundred people, it's nice to know how many to plan for, in fact, it's an absolute must and people should be more courteous in this regard. The RSVP response card should match the wedding invitation, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope and be placed in the same envelope with the invitation.

I highly recommend the use of a wedding program.  I think it's one of the best ideas to come along in a while.  The program should identify the wedding attendants, parents of the couple, the ceremony officiant, who the vocalist or instrument player is and  the chosen music.  Don't go through a lot of expense on wedding programs.  You can design and create a nice program on your home computer.  Programs are usually left in the guest seat or discarded,  so don't spend a lot of money on this.  Guests should receive their program as they arrive at the ceremony and before being seated.  You can either have the ushers or a mature child hand them out or simply place them on a table at the entrance for the guest to pick up.
