This will be a crucial part of your planning because the dress needs to arrive in time enough to allow for alterations, bridal portraits and possibly cleaning. Some gowns can take six months to come in which is okay if you've started planning your wedding ahead of time. For those of you who haven't had the advantage of early planning, remember that most gowns require two to four months for delivery.
The more you do on line the less exhausting it will be. When you do decide to strike out in search of the perfect dress; be prepared for a long day. Plan on trying on a lot of bridal gowns that day. It wouldn't be uncommon to try on twenty or thirty gowns in a single shopping day. Most brides have an idea of what they want but keep that mind open. You just never know what you can find in the stores and on line.
Bring your video camera! Most bridal salons are so worried about the styles of their bridal gowns being copied that they sometimes forget their manners and who the customer is. I'm flattered, but give me a break. Most of us are just not talented enough to be copying bridal gowns nor are most of the local seamstresses. Occasionally though, you will visit a salon that is eager to accommodate the customer and not so worried about the rarity of a design being copied. When you do; have that camera ready!
Above all, don't let this whole process overwhelm you. Yes, you are going to have to make your way through lots of gowns but remember, only one will be right for you and you will know it the minute you turn to face the mirror. It's something you just know. Don't let anything about your wedding planning overwhelm you, instead, have fun with it. Remember that not everything will go smoothly. Just in case there is a problem, make sure you have enough extra time banked away.
